SU Holiday Camps

Dozens of children heard the Gospel taught at camps across Tasmania during the winter months, thanks to your support. And despite some heavy rain, nothing could dampen the spirits of campers, as leaders and kids enjoyed wonderful times of learning and fun together.

Untitled-1At the SUPA North Camp, wet and wild weather gave the opportunity for some unexpected camp activities, including an impromptu concert! Kids heard Bible truths explained, and spent time chatting in small groups, prompting one leader to say, “while the weather outside might have been bleak, God’s blessings still rained on us in many ways.” A break in the rain gave campers an opportunity to plant almost 100 native trees along the foreshore, and also grow their very own sprouts. These outdoor activities were the ideal opportunity to learn more about how God lovingly cares for his people and his creation.

Untitled-2Meanwhile at SUPA South Camp, the message rang out loud clear that “junior leaders rock!” With love, energy and contagious enthusiasm, the young leaders showed a maturity beyond their years, while developing important leadership skills they could take back to their home churches.

This year’s camp included eight junior leaders and four adults who started as junior leaders some years ago. Camp directors were full of praise for the young leaders, saying, “they served as excellent role models for other children who were watching their every move”.Untitled-3

In Burnie, a group of local churches oversaw the School Holiday Activity Club (SHAC), which was hosted at Romaine Park Primary School. The SHAC was filled with fun activities, while children also learned biblical values and took the opportunity to build relationships with friends and leaders. The SHAC concluded with a family barbecue, which served as the ideal opportunity for creating connections with the local community. Lydia, a SHAC leader and local mum says, “getting to know the kids & creating a sense of belonging in the group was a highlight for me… and because our son goes to the school, there will be many more opportunities to connect with kids and their families in the school setting”. With the weather now well and truly warmer, preparations are underway for more SU Camps this summer. Please be praying for all our leaders and children on camps over the holidays. And thank you for supporting SU TAS as we seek to to make God’s Good News known to children, young people and families across Tasmania!

5 members of the SUmmit team set off in the Point to Pinnacle and all of us made it to the top. Congratulations to Andrew Turner who crossed the line first in our team. Andrew had committed to wearing a pink tutu if he raised $2,000 so maybe it was his embarrassment which saw him racing to the top?
Our sense of achievement was not just from managing to haul our aching limbs to the Pinnacle of Mount Wellington but also the $5,000+ in funds which generous sponsors gave to support SU Tas to help our young volunteers reach their full potential. With those funds we will be able to support young volunteers to attend events and develop skills which would have been out of their reach – thank you so much!
We’ll be doing it again in 2014 and would be thrilled if you would like to join the team as a runner, walker or sponsor.
